About The Books
Adam Undercover is a planned three-book series. Written in the format of a boarding school adventure, the story follows Adam Locke and his new classmates through their high school years. While struggling with universally common issues like friendship, trust and loyalty, self-confidence and courage, the teens have the added pressure of both traveling and saving the world on a regular basis.
Appropriate Content
As would be expected in a spy novel, the action sequences depicted in the books are at times intense and often involve mortal danger. Deaths do occur, but are not described in overly graphic detail. In several cases, these events are an important part of a character’s growth and journey.
Hormones and romance are also recurring themes presented as a normal part of adolescence. The story explores the ways in which the often constant barrage of emotions can impact different relationships and situations. There are several instances of physical affection, but they are portrayed at a ‘PG’ level.
As with many young adult series, the later books will see the characters maturing and dealing with increasingly complex issues and levels of drama and action. Given that readers will mature along with the characters, starting the series at age 12 or 13 is recommended.
Education and Technology
Current and near-future technology play a prominent role in the books. While any good spy has gadgets, in many cases Adam and company conceive of and build the tools they use in their adventures. STEM subjects including computer and materials sciences, engineering, and physics play a crucial part in the students’ clandestine training.
The important role of our global information culture is also a major component in Adam’s world. The Internet, data security, privacy, and surveillance are all described in a generally true-to-life fashion.
